St Therese, Mangere East Parish
Greetings! This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in all of our churches in New Zealand as our National Patronal Feast. As we honour Mary, it is tempting to think that we can never hope to be like her. Yet we must not allow our sense of unworthiness to obscure the reality of God’s infinite power. Mary’s unique experience and her untainted goodness should certainly cause us to marvel, but they are to inspire rather than discourage us. In her life on earth and in her Assumption into heaven, she shows us what great things God can produce from obscure, unpromising situations. Jesus achieved victory over death by dying in disgrace. Mary was clothed in glory not because she was famous, but because she was humble. Such is God’s unworldly wisdom.
We are called to be like Mary in accepting God’s will for us with courage and humility. We are also called to be like God himself in caring for the lowly, feeding the hungry, and defending the defenceless. However insignificant we may think our actions are, God’s power can achieve ends from our small beginnings.
Cup of tea for the Assumption celebration
I would like to thank St Therese Legion of Mary for serving a cuppa after the 10am mass at St Therese and St Anthony's PPC for their cup of tea service at St Anthony's after the 9am mass on Sunday to celebrate the feast of the Assumption in our parishes. Thank you for good food and great love.
